Wk4: My Connections to Play

2 Quotes: 1).Playing reduces stress, improves life, and increases creativity. Who doesn't want that? Stevanne Auerbach, Dr. Toy 2). Along with milk and vegetables kids need a steady diet of rocks and worms.
Rocks need skipping,
Holes need digging,
Water needs splashing,
Bugs and Frogs and slimy stuff need finding.

I always had someone with me outside and encouraging me to explore, but to be safe. I was the kid who was not afraid of picking up bugs, snakes or anything else and either trying to keep it or chasing the other kids around the yard with it in my hand.
I feel that play is different now than when I was a child, children don't go outside and play that much any more. They have way to many other things to occupy them, they have video games, computers and other electronic materials. I would hope that young children would be encouraged to get outside and play more and to explore the beauty of outside. I still love the outdoors, I love to get out and look at trees, bird watch and work in my flower garden. I am constantly collecting things to share with my students, we have snake skin, bird nest, bee hive, pine cones, leaves and even dead bugs that are in bug boxes. I love for my students to get outside and play, explore and learn. It is very important to get out and play.

  1. Lori,I agree with you that many children don't spend enough time outdoors these days. We are lucky to have a very natural outside play space at my preschool. It's not paved, has trees and bushes...lots of good space for nature-based exploration. We spend as much time as we possibly can out there : )

  2. I'm from your team Lori, nature for me is the best way of incorporating play. My most sharish memories are related to playing in the outdoors either with my Dad in the park, looking for insects with my cousins and playing tag. As you children seem to me distracted with the use of other electronic devises as well as the television. As adults and educators it is our responsibility to encourage children to use their imagination, explore the world around them and just forget for a while about these distractions.

  3. Hi Lori,
I love your quotes, great choices! I was like you, always playing outside and it is sad to see that so many kids today don't do this anymore. It's great that you are sharing your love for nature with your students, bringing it into the classroom, and encouraging your students to explore- I bet that they will remember this too!

  4. Lori - I love your quote, slimy things do need finding! Yes, it is sad to see so many kids that never leave the house. I think that depending on where you live this does differ slightly. I do see more kids outdoors in the country and in isolated areas where we live and then as they get older seem to be stuck on the computers and texting on the cell phones.
