After speaking to three different individuals one of a different gender, one of a different race and one of a different age. There were a few aspects that were the same as in the readings from this week like: race, practices, languages and ways of life. They all three defined culture and diversity as: different races, traditions, practices, languages, and the ways others live. The individual of a different age which is a bit younger mentioned holidays and celebrations as culture.
Some aspects omitted economics, religion, parenting patterns, the way we eat, sleep, talk, care for the sick, relate to another, think about work, and life styles (Derman-Sparks & Edwards, 2010).
I have been influenced by other peoples definitions to be open to all people and to ask questions, so that I can learn about others and how they ways of life.
All in all, in my judgment, I feel that we are all the same, yet different in our own ways.
Hello Lori,
ReplyDeleteAs I was reading the answers from the people you interviewed, I can see how often we relate culture and diversity to race, traditions and language. Until I took this culture I was able to really understand the simple and complex elements that form a persons culture. As it was mentioned in our reading, Culture is like an "ice berg', and visibly we can only see the tip of it and the rest is hidden. It is our job to discover what are the essential aspects of a persons culture, in order to better understand and suport that particular person or child.
Lori,
ReplyDeleteI try my best to find something good in everybody. I was tought to treat others as you want to be treated, this is an easy formula for a positive cultural experience.
Lori,
ReplyDeleteI also had a similar result in what was omitted. I like that you brought up parenting patterns and economics as a part of defining culture. I read somewhere in our resources this week that the way we raise our children is a great indicator of culture.
Hi Lori,
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
I think to an extent, we are all influenced by other people's responses to ideas and concepts. I think you were able to encase all your interviewees' ideas into a concise blog to make it effect and interesting.
Hi Lori,
ReplyDeleteI think it is easy to define culture using the aspects of surface culture and overlook the aspects that make up deep culture; I know a few weeks ago I probably would have done the same!
You are right, we are influenced by other's ideas and definitions of things. One of my respondents gave me a very brief answer and I was tempted to prompt her to think about culture and diversity more...and then I realized that that is her definition and part of this assignment is to listen to what others have to say! It's great that you have been influenced to be open to all and ask questions; this is the only way that we can truly learn about others and I am sure that it has served you well. Thank you for sharing what you have learned this week!
Considering things like a person's attitude toward work or taking care of the sick or how they are differently economically are all three great examples of deeper culture. I think typically we don;t find out our cultural differences until we are confronted with a situation that brings a conflict of opinion or behavior to light. As EC professionls it will be a challenge to not have expectations when working with families. Thank you for sharing.
