Wk 8 What I have learned

One hope that I have when it comes to me working with children and families,s that I set a positive and honest example for them. I must take into consideration what is best for all parties and think and plan for the future of those I am working with or for.

One goal that I am setting for the early childhood field when it comes to children and families with issues relating to diversity, equity and social justice is: Is to be open and honest with myself and those involved. To be able to give children and families the required support, resources and/or materials that they made need at any time.

To all of my colleagues, it is great feeling within my heart to know that like myself, there are other individuals that seek to help young children and families within our society. We are fighting a tough battle, but if we as early childhood educators and professionals stay strong and focus, we can help those who need help. I am sad to see this class end, however I am excited about being 2 classes away form completing my Master's program. Good luck and best wishes to all of you!

WK 7 CREATING ART

This is what I have learned from this course. Early Childhood Educators can help young children COPE with bias, discomfort and trauma. We have to do it for the children. Taking care of them now and they will take care of us in the future!

WK 6 "We Don't Say Those Words In Class!"

I could not think or recall a time when this situation happened with me and my son's, however my co-teacher gave me a situation with her and her middle school aged son.
Last spring Ms. R and her son Z were on a field trip with his 7th grade class at the Fernbank Science Center in Atlanta, Ga. Ms. J said, "As they walked through the museum looking at the artifacts throughout the museum, "her son "Z" said really loud in front of other students and chaprones, "Wow, look at that UPS man, why is her wearing his shorts about his knees," Z continued with, "Look everybody he looks gay with those shorts on." Ms. R said, "The UPS man looked at the group and just shook his head.
Ms. R said, "Z that is the requirements of the company UPS", it identifies the company, as well it is woren for professional reasons and that what he said, "Was not appropriate."
That certain companies require their employees to have certain dress codes and there is nothing wrong with the employees shorts.
An anti-bias educator, could have explained that we should judge or talk about someone, just because they wear their shorts differently than other people. This educator could have gave examples of other companies that require certain dress codes and the importance of looking nice, decent and respectful for the company that people work for.

Wk 3 6357-6

My response that early childhood centers should avoid the inclusion of books that contain gay, lesbian or same sex families, every child should be accessible to all books, regardless of who is in the books, every early childhood classroom should be diversified and this will help each child to developed a positive identity of not only themselves, but those around them. Each child must be given the opportunity to learn about all people, as early childhood professionals, we know that we are their first experience to the outside world, so I do not see what books about gays, lesbians or same sex families, should not be included.
If I was told that a parent/family member did not want their child to be cared for, educated by or interacted with: I would be apalled, just because a person is homosexual or transgender does not mean that they are not capable of caring for young children. Once again, the early childhood field must have diversity not only from sex, race or gender. Children will benefit from all people, it should not matter who the person is,  that is taking care of the children. My concern is what they do in the classroom with the child and that they have the best interest for the young child at heart.

WK 8 Moving On

I know that without support from my colleagues through discussions and blogs, it would be difficult to keep pushing forward. Even though we have never met, I feel like all of us have the same goals in mind.  I also tried to be positive throughout any situations and with positive and mature adults, if helps make it so much easier. This class has defintely helped me with my communication and collaboration skills and I feel the same for my colleagues.

My wish for my colleagues is that they continue to reach for the stars and keep in mind the reason that wse are doing this and it is for the future generations. They need all of the support and positive encouragement that we ALL can give them. We have to remember if we just help to change one life, we have made an accomplishment. With all of the early childhood professionals that are in the field, that would be alot of lives that we would touch.

My contact information is jesselori@bellsouth.net, lori.gardner@clayton.k12.ga.us, (404) 402-3099 cell phone.

Good luck and best wishes to all, if I can be of any assistance to any of you, please feel free to contact me.

think about how your colleagues have supported you, how you have supported them, and what you wish for your colleagues as they continue on their professional path

WK 6 Team Building and Collaboration

In my judgment, I do feel that the high-performing groups are the hardest to leave, since it takes a team to make the group to perform, then once the goals have been accomplished it is hard to say goodbye.
Also, groups that have the clearest established goals and objectives, along with a leader and a great dependable team are also very hard to leave.
The hardest group I would say for me to leave was when I received a promotion this school year as a Lead teacher and I am no longer a part of the Paraprofessional team at my job. The paraprofessionals at my primary school have a great relationship, they go out to eat, they exchange gifts and just look out for each other and take care of each other.
When the paraprofessionals found out that I had been promoted, they prepared for me a secret luncheon during the week of pre-planning, I was so shocked and they truly caught me off guard.
Another group that is hard for me to disconnect from is my high school graduating class, we were the first class to graduate from a new high school and over the years we have set up many alumni invents and regardless of what is going on in my life, I will drop it or postpone it to participate with my high school classmates. My husband just shakes his head and laughs.
I truly have not thought about saying Good-bye to my colleagues after this class is completed. I would hope that we all some how keep in touch rather through internet, text messages, etc. We have built some strong relationships, eventhough we have never met in person, I love the atmosphere and I know that the individuals that have been in many of my classes since Sept of 2010, have the best interest for young children and their families at hand.
Adjourning, is letting us know that the job is complete as well as relationships have been built. As a team member, you have learned to trust and respect those that were in your group. All members of the group have worked effectively to reach a common goal.

Wk 5 Communication in action

I have problems communicating with my 19 year old son. He thinks he knows everything and some of the choices that he is making currently in his life are not good ones.  If I say something to him, he swears that I don't know anything, he says "Ma, your are from the old school and this is new school."
So I have been biting my tongue and I am letting him spread his wings and fly on his own. I told him in order to live in my house he either needed to enroll in college and/or get a job, so guess what he decided to do. Move out without doing either one.
All I can do is pray that God keeps him safe and sound from any hurt, harm or danger. Hwever, it is hard for me not to express my voice, because he is my son. Any suggestions?

WK 4 Who Am I As A Communicator?

What is the one thing that surprised you the most? I think the one thing that surprised me the most is that the scores for the Verbal Aggressiveness Scale were so different from my husband and co teacher. However, I am going to work on that and that is 1 important goal for me now that I see I need help with it.  What other insights about communication did you gain this week? That I am very concerned with others, however sometimes I tend to be very trusting and it can cause problems for me and the ones involved.
I loved this assignment, I learned alot about myself and what I need to work on to help me to be a better communicator to the young children, families, colleagues and others that I may communicate with throughout my career. This is a resource that I can use to grow and develop and maybe help others along the way.

WK 3 Communication and Culture

Yes, I do find myself communicating with people from different groups and cultures differently after this wee.
The three strategies I could use to help communicate more effectively with the people or groups I have identified:
First, I think it is important to have whatever paperwork that is being sent home to parents easyfor them to read, so I try to have copies in their language so that they know what is going on and so they do not miss out on important information concerning their child and school.
Second, my school system has parent liasions that are available to help teachers and other early childhood professionals, to communicate or collect resources for parents of children, as well as the child itself.
Third, I feel that it might be helpful to help parents by introducing them to parents that may be having the same issues or just may be new to the area and would like to become familiar with their community.
As an early childhood professionals, I have to be available to help all children and their parents, if I can not help them, then it is my place to connect them with the proper resources to help them, regardless of the situation.

WK 2 Communication

I decided to watch a show on ESPN called the CENTER.  I have never watched anything that talks about athletes and what is going on. However, I do like sports, so this was very interesteing to me.
     WITHOUT SOUND:
I think the reporters have respect for each other, however they have their own opinions and they see the same things just in different perspectives. I feel that they are expressing how they feel through their hand gestures and facial expressions, there is alot of smiling and it seems that there is alot of conversations being interrupted and everybody trying to talk over each other.
WITH SOUND: I still feel that they respect each other, but just have so many different opinions and everybody wants to be right and in the real world we know that, that is impossible. Yes, because there is only certain shows that I watch on a regular basis. I know the people that are on the show and I feel a connection with them, due to watching the show regularly.
I learned that communication is very detailed and deserves the speaker as well as the listener to be focused in on what is being said and what is being heard.
The aha moment for me, was watching these grown men, interrupt each other and then laugh at their colleagues the whole time they were speaking. I know that when I am in a conversation, I hate to be interrupted and cut-off in the middle of a sentence, show I can only imagine how I would be on live television in front of millions of people.
In closing, I think we MUST be considerate of each other, as well as children and their families and not only LISTEN to what is being said, but HEAR what is being said.

6165-2 Wk 1 Communication

For this week's blog assignment, I chose to use my God-son as my example. Zaire is only 15 months old, however when he grandmother comes home from work, Zaire meets her with his hands in the air and he is babbling and making sounds, the grandmother swears that Zaire is telling on his mother that he has been with all day with. Even if the grandmother goes into a different part of the house, Zaire follows her and continues these gestures and sounds for a good bit of an hour or longer, everyday. I didn't believe her until I met her at her house last Friday evening to go and have dinner together. When we walked into the house, he began to babble, wave his hands and look back at his mother.
I believe that Zaire has effective communcation, I told his mother, she better watch out, because when he really starts talking he is going to tell on her for everything and he will be sincere when he begans to speak.
I am not sure if I would model this behavior, but I find it amazing that a 15 month old toddler, using his hands and babbling all while looking at this mother. We do not know what he is trying to say, however he surely knows, due to the actions and gestures he shows while trying to relay his messages to those who will listen.

WK 8 Professional Hopes and Goals

One hope of mine when I think about working with young children and families is that all families be treated the same and be respected, appreciated and serviced to the fullest. When we as early childhood professionals come in contact with families of diversity,we should make sure they are taken care of , their voices are heard and their needs are met.
One goal that I would like to set for the early childhood field related to issues of diversity, equity and social justice is that when I am put in the place to serve that young child and/or their family, I do it with their needs at hand, as well as communicate with other early childhood professionals, if other resources are needed.
I would like to say "Thank You", to all of the dedicated early childhood professionals that I have grown to respect, appreciate and trust throughout this course as well as others courses that we have taken together. I would like to wish you all the best of luck and if there is anything that I can do to help one of you, please feel free to contact me.  Thanks and Good Luck!

WK 7 Welcoming Families from Around the World

The country I would choose would be Africa, I would love to learn more about their culture, education and ways of life. First, I would research the country through books or the internet. Second, I would see if there are any parents from Africa throughout my school that I could contact. Third, I would  get with the parent liasion at my school and see is she could help. Fourth, I would contact our resource department through the county. Fifth, I would contact family and see if there was a way to set up a face to face conference.

I would hope that these ways help me and the family, so that we are comfortable with each other. I would like to make their transition form Africa to America as smooth as possible. This family will have so many issues and things to do and learn, so if I can make it a little easier on them that will help. I can also have some type of idea of waht to expect from this family. The more I know about the family the better off I will be. The most important thing is to start and maintain a strong line of communication with all members.

WK 6 The personal side of bias, prejudice and oppression

The memory of an incident that I experienced with bias, prejudice and/or oppression is:
When my 18 year old son was in the 8th grade, he played football, basketball, ran track and played baseball at the park. While playing football, he was injured by another player from the other team and his collar bone was broken, so he was under a doctors care for 4 weeks. At the beginning of the 4th week, basketball tryouts were held, so we got a note from the doctor releasing him and stating that hwe was able to tryout and play basketball.
All of the young men that tried out were given one full week to participate with tryouts, however my son was only given two days, per the coach and then was denied a position on the team, although he had played the year before and was named, "The student athlete of the year in 7th grade."
So, I requested a meeting with the athletic director and the coach, to find out what happened and why was he treated unfairly compared to the other boys. The athletic director and coach were only expecting me and my son to attend the meeting, however my husband at the last minute arrived at the school to sit in on the meeting and as the meeting began, the comment was made to me, "Mrs. Gardner,  we were not expecting Mr. Gardner. We thought that we could solve the problem without him." My husband then spoke and said, "I just want to make sure that the situation is treated fair and everything is resolved."
To make the long story short, my son was able to play ball, the coach was reprimanded by the athletic director, because my son should have been given the same time as the others. Also, the coach made the comment to my son, "I want another student to be elected, "The student athlete of the year and not you two years in a row."
I feel that not only my son, but myself as well were treated unfairly and in my judgment, I feel that the coach was jealous of my son and his talents on the field as well as the classroom. If I were the coach, I would have used my son as a role model for other young men, who made be having a hard time in the classroom or on the field. The coach needs to learn how to support all students and not feel the way he felt. I would have paired students together that needed  help, so that everyone could have an extra hand in the learning, so that he could remain eligible to play sports in middle school.

Wk4 Practicing Awareness of Microaggressions

The example of a microaggession that I am sharing is as follows:

I overheard another teacher working with some of the older kids during our academic time at the summer camp, I am working at for the summer. The teacher said to the African-American male student, that "If you do not tighten up and pay attention and quit letting your behavior get in your way, then you are going to be another African-American male that has a label."

When I heard this, I had to stop what I was doing with my group and walk out into the hallway. I thought to myself, how is this child that is going to the 5th grade, know anything about African-American males and how society labels them. This student is going to the 5th grade, however he has a documented learning disability, so maybe some of his behavior is related to his disability.

It made me take a step back and look at myself and some of my actions. I have learned that even in the 21st century, our society still has issues with discrimination, prejudice and/or stereotypes.

WK 3: Perspectives on Diversity and Culture

After speaking to three different individuals one of a different gender, one of a different race and one of a different age. There were a few aspects that were the same as in the readings from this week like: race, practices, languages and ways of life. They all three defined culture and diversity as: different races, traditions, practices, languages, and the ways others live. The individual of a different age which is a bit younger mentioned holidays and celebrations as culture.
Some aspects omitted economics, religion, parenting patterns,  the way we eat, sleep, talk, care for the sick, relate to another, think about work, and life styles (Derman-Sparks & Edwards, 2010).
I have been influenced by other peoples definitions  to be open to all people and to ask questions, so that I can learn about others and how they ways of life.
All in all, in my judgment, I feel that we are all the same, yet different in our own ways.

Wk2: 6164-2: My Family Culture

The three items that I would choose to take would be:
1). A photograph of my family
2). My Bible
3). My Wedding Ring
The explanation to others of what each item means to me:
The photo shows my husband, our two sons and myself. My Bible is words of inspiration and during a catastrophe words of inspiration will be needed. My wedding ring is dear to me, it represents the bond that my husband and I have made to each other.
My feelings on having to give up two of the three items :
I would be upset, but I would have to do whatever is asked of me to make the situation as positive as it could be. I would choose to keep my Bible, I think that being able to read the word through out this terrible time, would be very helpful. The photograph means alot, but I have the memory of my husband and children embedded in my mind and the ring is a representation of a bond and it has sentimental meaning, but it can be replaced.
Any insights that I have gained as a result of this exercise:
As I thought about the three items I would take, it was kind of difficult to decide on what to take and why. I tried to take things that were small enough to carry, but I wanted things that had some type of meaning or represented my life, my family and how all of those things are possible.

WK8 When I think of research....

1). I have gained alot of important information that is sued when researcher(s) perform a research on any topic. I learned that research is the systematic investigation of a topic or issue that is culturally specific and which seeks information and/or solutions. It can begin with a question, concern, situation or controversy.
2). My ideas about research have changed to due to the fact that it takes alot to start, work on and complete any research/study. There is alot of time, effort and patience that goes into each and every research. Once the research is started, it must be followed through so that the research can be valid and accurate.
3). The research must be well planned out, designed to meet the needs of all parties, and the research must be conducted to to the fullest, so that the information can be used to further help other early childhood or professionals in the field.
4). The biggest challenge that I met was making sure that all of the children that I chose to research were able to take soemthing away from the research all together. I just wanted to be able to help all of the children to learn something about multicultural experiences and how they can benefit everyone.
5). I have learned to be more open and patience when it comes to finding out what is best for young children and their future. There is so much that a young child should know, but as the early childhood professional I have to make sure waht is presented to them is developmentally ready for each child and if not make the proper adjustments.
I would like to thank all of my colleagues that were in Group 2 and well as Dr. Davis for all of the support, ideas and conversations. All of the help and information that was available through this course and the detailed discussions has helped me to become a more cautious early childhood professional and I will continue to have the best interest in my heart for all young children and their families.

WK3 6163 Research that Benefits Children and Families-Uplifting Stories Option 1

I chose option 1 for this week's blog assignment:

I would like to share two research articles with my colleagues that has positively affected children and their families. The first article is "The Effects of Universal Pre-K in Oklahoma: Research Highlights and Policy Implications, CROCUS Working Paper." The authors are William T. Gormley, Jr. and Deborah Phillips. I found it on the ERIC through Walden University. The second article is " The Effects of Universal Pre-K on Cognitive Development". The authors are William T. Gormley, Jr., Ted Gayer, Deborah Phillips and Brittany Dawson. T found it on the ERIC through Walden University.
I found this articles exciting and they both gave an enormous amount of information on the effects of an Universal Pre-K program and how they effect children and families. Anyone that is interested in Pre-K or Cognitive Development would gain information from these two articles.

Wk 2 6163 Your Personal Research Journey

The topic I chose for the simulation is: Diversity in Early Childhood Education. I chose this topic due to the fact that I have been teaching in the Georgia Lottery Pre-K program since Georgia received the Pre-K in 1993. Over the years, I have observed many different cultures and diversity in the classrooms thorughout child care centers as well as the public school settings. I have had the pleasure to work with many children that speak more than one language as well as with their parents. Along with this, there has been a lack of translators for me to talk to parents one on one, so we have to resort to using the child(ren) to translate the conversations. I would much rather, have a parent-teacher conference with just myself and the parent, so that the cvhild (ren) are not involved in that process.
I love the research chart, I am able to get a better understanding of terms used and their defintions, a highlight that caught my attention, that allows me to expand on the topic and give a personal comment and I can hose a reflection question to reflect on and write about. I also love the article "A practical guide to reading research articles", the information that is throughout this package is useful and makes reading articles and journals easier and I feel that I have gained more information by just using the suggestions within the handout, than I would have reading the whole article or journal.
I would like for all of my colleagues to know that I am open to any ideas or suggestions that will help me to benefit more than ever with this class, so that I can carry it with me throughout the rest of my time at Walden University. The only advice that I would give to any of you, is to read, read, read!  I have found that over the time here at Walden University, the most important thing is to be sure to read any and all materials that is provided my the instructor of the class. The resource that I would share when it comes to writing journal reviews or any application is if you are unsure, ask!
If any one has any ideas or suggestions, please feel free to post. I am open to any help with this class. I am open due to the fact that whatever I learn from this class and any other well only be for me to provide better high quality programs for the young children in my care or that I am affliated with.

Wk 8 Final Blog Assignment

Three consequences of learning about the international early childhood field for my professional and personal development:

1). By learning about the international early childhood education, I can be helpful to my co workers or any other EC professionals, by providing resources that maybe used within their classrooms or given to families.

2). I can use the information about the international early childhood field, to help get the word out about the importance of early childhood education and the benefits that a young child can receive when he/she attends a high-quality program.

3). When visiting websites on the international early childhood field, I can learn about goals, mission statements, research and many other areas that are of high importance when it comes to young children and their families.

There are many ideas, concepts, resources and information that the international early childhood field provides for EC professionals and any other professionals who have the best interest for young children in mind.

One goal for the field related to international awareness of issues and trends and the spirit of collegial relations:

I would hope that the one goal that ALL EC professionals lean towards is to provide high quality learning programs, that can improve health, social emotional and cognitive outcomes, improve school readiness skills, prevent achievement gaps, and provide cost effective investments along all education pipelines. (RAND, 2008).

WK7 Getting to know your International Contacts-Part 3 ALTERNATIVE

Share at least three new ideas or insights you gained about issues related to international early childhood education that relate to your professional goals.
As I researched through UNESCO's "Early Childhood Care and Education" wesbsite I found. I chose Europe and North America as the two countries to look at.

1). IBE: International Bureau of Education: to enhance curriculum development and educational content.  Inclusive quality education is fundamental to achieving human, social and economic development, they agreed that governments as well as all the other social actors have an important role in providing a quality education for all and, in doing so, should recognize the importance of a broadened concept of inclusive education that addresses the diverse needs of all learners and that is relevant, equitable and effective.

2). UIL: The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning: To promote literacy, nonformal education, adult and lifelong learning. Their annual report in 2010 was published in English and French.
Advocacy for literacy, non-formal education and adult and lifelong learning is one of the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning’s main areas of action. To advocate effectively, it generates and draws on research evidence; organises national, regional and international policy dialogues, forums and conferences; and produces and maintains knowledge and information systems including publications. UIL is developing advocacy measures for literacy and adult education policies for integration into national development and education plns with a lifelong learning perspective. Furthermore, UIL is promoting local languages and mother-tongue-based multilingual education, as well as the use of appropriate channels of communication to reach target audiences.

3). IIEP: International Institute for Educational Planning: To help countries design, plan, and manage their education systems. To strengthen the capacity of countries to plan and manage their education systems .A centre for training and research - specialized in educational planning and management. The International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP) was created by UNESCO in 1963 in Paris, France. It is supported by grants from UNESCO and by voluntary contributions from Member States and others. IIEP is an integral part of UNESCO, yet it enjoys a large amount of autonomy. Meeting the needs of countries in the development of their education systems:Training planners and managers in skills to analyze and plan, manage and implement, monitor and evaluate.Supporting institutions and improving administrative routines, organization, leadership skills.Fostering an enabling environment through policy forums, international co-operation and networking.

The relationship that I found that connects this website and my professional goals, is to make early childhood education my number one priority and to participate in helping policymakers and advocates get the word out about the importance of high quality early childhood programs.

WK 6: Sharing Web Resources

Where do they lead? As I explored some of the outside links to http://www.preknow.org/. I found some links to information for families, business and community leaders, media, policy makers, pre-k advocates, a resource center and a link for Votes Count.

What do you find? I chose to search through "Votes Count", it contains information on FY11 highlights, state data, school funding, formulas, and federal links. Each tab has information for the upcoming school year and it includes information for each state.

What new information is available? Families-There is a checklist that can be downloaded and printed for paretns, who are searching for a high quality Pre-k program. There are also links for parents to read on how to help their child to be ready for pre-k as well as kindergarten.

Yes, this website is very helpful to teachers and professionals. The data provided can help policy makers and advocates to continue to voice their opinions and prove that Pre-k is a much needed program and that early childhood education must be of the highest quality.

In closing, I learned that all states are going through some type of crisis with early childhood education and the main concern should be "What is best for all young children."

This is a news clippping from  http://www.preknow.org/.

Arne Duncan on the future of education in the U.S.

If governors have to cut, there are smart ways to cut, and frankly, there are dumb ways to cut. You have some governors who are cutting early childhood education. I just simply can't support that. Our three- and four-year-olds don't have lobbyists, but if we want to close achievement gaps -- if we're serious about giving every single child a chance to be successful -- we have to enter kindergarten ready to learn and ready to read.

Wk5: Getting to Know Your International Contacts: ALTERNATIVE

I had to explore Harvard University's "Global Children's Initiative" website (http://developingchild.harvard.edu/initiatives/global_initiative/), due to not receiving a response. The insights and information that I gained from the website are as follows:
1). Persistent Fear and Anxiety Can Affect Young Children's Learning and Development: Science shows that exposure to circumstances that produce persistent fear and chronic anxiety can have lifelong consequences by disrupting the developing architecture of the brain. Unfortunately, many young children are exposed to such circumstances. While some of these experiences are one-time events and others may reoccur or persist over time, all of them have the potential to affect how children learn, sole problems and relate to others. All of society would benefit from a greater capacity to address the problem of excessive fear and anxiety in young children across a broad array of service systems. (developingchild).
2). The Science of Early Childhood Development: Closing the Gap Between What We Know and What We Do: The need to address significant inequalities in opportunity, beginning in the earliest years of life, is both a fundamental moral responsibility and a critical investment in our nation's sociala nd economic future. It is compelling task that calls for broad, bipartisan collaboration. And yet, debate in the policy arena often highlights ideological differences and value conflicts more than it seeks common interest. The science of early childhood development can provide a values-neutral framework for informing choices among alternative priorities and for building consensus around a shared plan of action. The well being of our nation's children and the security of our collective future would be well served by such wise choices and concerted commitment. (developingchild).
3). Center on the Developing Child was founded in 2006 on the belief that the vitality and sustainability of any society depend on the extent to which it expands opportunities early in life for all children to achieve their full potential and engage in responsible and productive citizenship. They view healthy child development as the foudnation of econonmic prosperity, strong comminties and a just society, and our mission is to advance that vision by leveraging science to enhance child well-being through innovations in policy and practice. (developingchild).
The additional imformation I gained :
Is that the Center on the Devloping Child has 2 priorities in Early Childhood Development: 1). This area is to adapt the successfuk work the Center has conducted in the United States for a broader range of strategically selected audiences, in an effort to energize and reframe the global dialogue around investments in the earliest years of life. 2). To generate and apply new knowledge that addresses the health ad developmental needs of young children in a variety of settings. Including projects such as planning, fundraising and implementation.
There is alot of information on this website to choose from, I looked at it for about 2 hours and I will be looking back at it, from now on. I made it one of  my favorites on my tool bar.

WK 4 Sharing Web Resources

This week preknow.org had a lot of discussion about many of the issues that are going on with pre-K across the nation. I have been working with Georgia Lottery Pre-K since 1993 and because of the changes that Governor Nathan Deal and his committee have brought forth, as of the Fall of 2011, I may not be working in a Pre-K classroom, unless I am approved to be the Lead Teacher. Starting in the Fall of 2011, the Lead Teacher for a Pre-K classroom in a Public school, does not have to be certified, so what will happen to the children in those classrooms?  I have a BA in Social Work and an Associate in ECE, so I am waiting to see if I meet the requirements to become a Lead Teacher, I sure do hope I can be a Lead Teacher, because I love Pre-K and the children that enter into the classroom.
The ideas from this week made me think about what will happen to the children that are in a Ga. Lottery classroom, if the person hired doesn't have experience with children particularly four year olds. Most children in pre-k have never been on a school setting, so they need extra love and support and teachers have to build a strong relationship with parents, because you as the teacher are responsible for their baby. I love meeting the parents during our home visits and starting a relationship that can last a life time.
There were several economists and politicians that were against Gov. Deal's proposal to make Georgia pre-K half day, so all parties got together and talked with and Gov. Deal decided to keep pre-k the full 6.5 hours, due to parents having to find and pay for after school, especially for those children that would have attended a public school pre-k classroom.
Pre-k programs are essential and every young child deserves to attend a program, so that he or she can play, develop social skills and learn the skills necessary for kindergarten and future years of education.  I hope that all of the people that are in office and decide what is best for our children's education, make the right decisions and do what is best for each individual child.
In my judgment, pre-k is a successful program and many children have benefited from the program. I have enjoyed working with pre-k and watching all of the children throughout my years, grow and become successful.  Every child deserves only the best.

Wk3 Getting to know your international contacts: Alternative

Alternative Assignment:
I chose the country Mongolia from the website, http://www.childhoodpoverty.org/.  I learned from this website that Mongolia transitioned from a socialist centrally planned one party state to a multi party democratic state with a liberalised econonmy started in 1990.
The country joined the World Trade Organization in 1997 and Mongolia became one of the most open economies in the world. However, the structural adjustment hit families hard, unemployment rose, inflation and prices soared. Cuts were made to social services and welfare reduced support available just when it was needed most.
Despite the growth and stability Mongolians have yet to see the benefits. In 1998, a survey indicated that 36% of the population were living below the income poverty line and that poverty in Mongolia to be higher in many urban areas that in rural. There is a poverty research survey underway for more recent estimates.
Before the transition social services were of high standard and accessible to all. Now, access to health care for poor familes, migrants and those in remote rural areas is poor, this is due to health insurance scheme that demands user fees and restricts use to those registered as living in that area. The quality of serivces is bad and those who can often turn to private health clinics for treatment, further increasing the gap between the rich and poor.
Malnutrition, is a growing concern 30% of children under five in 1998 had a low height for their age and 10% were underweight. Many children and their families also show signs of nutrient deficiency. Some 51% of the population did not have access to safe drinking water in 1998.

Wk 2 6162-3 Sharing Web Resources

The organization I chose is: Pre[K]Now: A Campaign of the Pew Center on the Stateshttp://www.preknow.org/.

The focus of this organization is: The vision is a nation in which every child enters kindergarten prepared to succeed. To collaborate with advocates and policy makers to lead a movement for high-quality voluntary prekindergarten for all three and four year olds.

The organization has current information that details the importance of pre-k across the United States and how early childhood professionals can get involved with state and local officials, to provide the best possible early education to young children.

I learned that there are many states that have pre-k and that there are many educators who know and believe the imprtance of a high quality education is very important at an early age. In my judgment, pre-k must be made into a universal program to provide all children an opportunity to learn and be successful.

Wk 1:EDUC - 6162 - 3

Part 1: Establishing Professional Contacts: I hav emailed 4 individuals and yet to receive a response from either one, so I moving onto the Alternative for Part 1.

Part 2: Expanding Resources: I am toren between two of the websites that we could choose to resource and learn from. I chose Zero to Three and The PEW center of the states. http://www.zerotothree.org/   http://www.preknow.org/. I love learning about infants and toddlers and how we can build their social as well as their language skills and communucate with parents on these issues. However my heart and passion is with Pre-K children and laying the foundation for many fun, yet successful school years. The process that I went through to chose my website was as follows: I looked through all of the websites and I took what caught my interest and researched the website to see what it was all about. I am looking forward to looking at and learning from both of these websites thorughout this course and even beyond.

Wk 6: My Supports

My daily support factors are:
My religion is supportive in my environment, I am able to wake up in the morning and able to go to work, without a job I would not be able to pay bills, provide food or clothing, I would be lost, if I didn't know and believe that prayer works.
My husband supports me daily, he helps me by encouraging me to improve my education as well to build strong relationships with the children and their families. It would be very hard if my husband wasn't in my life, because he very positive. I would be lost without him.
The county that I work for provides the staff to open the building where I work on a daily basis, so that educators can teach children and children have a fun, loving and safe environment.
I have a Pre-K Coordinator that works outside the building, she is the contact person for the entire Pre-K program in our county, I also have a Bright from the Start consultant that works with the state of Georgia and the Pre-k classrooms that we can contact, Principal that is the top contact person for a building, then the Asst. Principal who is the contact person for classified staff as well as Pre-K
concerns or questions. Then there is the Lead teacher in the classroom that I receive support from daily in and out of work. I enjoy working with my teacher, she doesn't make it a big deal of who is in charge in the room. her concern is what is best for each individual children in our care.

It would be very difficult if these people where not in place to contact on Pre-K issues that may arise in the classroom, I have worked with Pre-K 17 years, but there is something new to learn everyday. If the above people where not available, my job as a Pre-K teacher would be more difficult then it already is and as far as my husband, Iwould truly be lost and miss his support and encouragement.
The challenge that I think would be hard for  me is to have the support of my husband and co workers during my Master's program.  My husband is very supportive and very encouraging and he always has something positive to say about my work and my grades. My co-workers that already have their Masters encourage me to work hard and always offer their help if I need it.

Wk4: My Connections to Play

2 Quotes: 1).Playing reduces stress, improves life, and increases creativity. Who doesn't want that? Stevanne Auerbach, Dr. Toy 2). Along with milk and vegetables kids need a steady diet of rocks and worms.
Rocks need skipping,
Holes need digging,
Water needs splashing,
Bugs and Frogs and slimy stuff need finding.
Advertisement RVing

I always had someone with me outside and encouraging me to explore, but to be safe. I was the kid who was not afraid of picking up bugs, snakes or anything else and either trying to keep it or chasing the other kids around the yard with it in my hand.
I feel that play is different now than when I was a child, children don't go outside and play that much any more. They have way to many other things to occupy them, they have video games, computers and other electronic materials. I would hope that young children would be encouraged to get outside and play more and to explore the beauty of outside. I still love the outdoors, I love to get out and look at trees, bird watch and work in my flower garden. I am constantly collecting things to share with my students, we have snake skin, bird nest, bee hive, pine cones, leaves and even dead bugs that are in bug boxes. I love for my students to get outside and play, explore and learn. It is very important to get out and play.

6161 Child Development and Public Health Wk 2

Nutrition/Malnutrition
Effects of malnutrition can be devastating and permanent. Whether during the pregnancy or first year of life, it can have a profound effect on a child's health as well as their ability to learn, communicate, socialize, reasoning and the way they adapt with their environment.
We have to secure their survival, but ensure that they have a healthy and stimulating childhood. This will prepare them for the future and help them to contrubute to the social and economic development of their countries and communities. There were 925 million hungry people in 2010 abd 578 million are in Asia and the Pacific. (pdfcast.org)
In South Asia, 78 million out of 150 million childrenin developing countries are still malnourished. The leading causes of mortality are respiratory infections, diarrhea and birth related conditions.(Unicef, 2000). South Asia is the worst off among all the regions in the developing world including Sub-Saharan Africa. One-third of children in South Asia suffer from low birth weight. Low birth weight is inextricably intertwined with and is indeed a manifestation of maternal under nutrition.
I have learned that if a child comes to my classroom that could possibly be malnutritioned, that could be a leading cause of him or her to have not developed properly. As an early childhood professional, I must help to get the word out that no child should be hungry and no family should have to worry about not being feed properly or at all.
